Education Programs
Learning science outdoors is exciting and makes it easier for children to understand concepts that are difficult to grasp in the classroom. Working with local school districts and home school groups, Audubon has developed Nature of Learning, a place–based science program for 5th through 8th grades. Nature of Learning focuses on the need for students to improve and strengthen their science skills, while being aligned with TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) mandated curriculum set by the state.
The program consists of hands-on activities relating to ecology, scientific observation, resource management, and citizenship. Students learn about the importance of wetlands for people and wildlife; sample insects from the ponds to determine the health of each water body; use various scientific methods to determine how different types of pollution affect river systems, ponds, lakes, and bays; and learn about the birds and plants living at Mitchell Lake.
Program fees are $5 each for students, teachers, and adult chaperones. For more information, please call 210-628-1639 or email mlac@audubon.org.

Careers in Conservation
Careers in Conservation provides college and high school students opportunities to work in the field of science and gain practical experience. These programs engage underrepresented groups and ultimately increase diversification in conservation science. Undergraduate students from Environmental Sciences programs participate in a six-week paid internship. At the same time, high school students from local school districts participate in a four-week paid internship. Working together, the interns conduct on-the-ground research projects at the site, and assist in conservation education programs. Internship activities include collaboration with graduate students and faculty from area universities, and discussions with other professionals in the field of conservation science.
